@coldacid @alyx @coolboymew So this UI was actually from Steam, this is kinda funny to me... I played a cracked CS back then so I remember it, but I didn't know what that "Steam" at the top even was...
@deadheat @coldacid @alyx @coolboymew I originally played CS in internet cafes when Steam didn't exist. Then when they upgraded, it was there but also felt annoying.
@takao @alyx @coldacid @coolboymew If the game had the same UI before Steam, then I think it's actually more likely that I also played a version from before they integrated CS into it, since I would only learn about Steam many years later, but I can't remember...

>internet cafes

My friends back then would talk about one day going to an internet cafe for an all-nighter, which was renting the whole place for your friends and play 6-8 hours straight from midnight to the morning for a much cheaper price... but we never did that, our parents probably would never agree to such a thing anyway, so to this day I don't know if such a service even existed or it was some sort of urban legend hahah
@takao @alyx @coldacid @coolboymew I'm really glad autists were recording things for no reason during the dawn of the internet, so now we still have this history available. I guess I was playing the post Steam version after all.
@deadheat @alyx @coldacid @coolboymew yeah, it's always fun to revisit old videos. One of the tapes I digitised has my brother and I chatting about nothing while filming Midnight Commander copying some files to an FTP server over a modem, with GNU Window Maker used as a window manager. Fun times ehhh
@deadheat @alyx @coldacid @coolboymew actually it's more schizo than this: GNU Midnight Commander is also working in Konsole…
@chuculate @alyx @coldacid @coolboymew @deadheat it was also using Adobe's bitmap Courier font. Bold variant lol
@takao @alyx @deadheat @coldacid @coolboymew WON menu style is very inconsistent. It's overall a Win32 thing, just running in parallel with the game engine. Looks a bit different from version to version too. The fancy buttons are just Photoshop preset. I actually reimplemented this preset with imagemagick but scratched it and rewrote the effect with my text renderer. Didn't finished it though.

What they did with Steam release is ported everything to their own toolkit actually made for Source. So every Valve product from GoldSource games, to Source and Steam used the same proprietary toolkit. (Steam also shares more code with Source even to this day, maybe even have some Quake I code)
It's very sad it's proprietary because it could be nice C++ game UI toolkit without "immediate mode" crap, although a bit boring visually.

Sorry, nobody needed that info, just too personal... %)
@deadheat @alyx @coldacid @coolboymew also overnight LAN parties were a thing in that cafe but they also kind of gave that place a bit of a reputation as a den of iniquity ww
