What stumps me is that it's not just VLC, but also mpv... This kinda indicates that it's either a problem with hardware acceleration or drivers.
When you tried disabling hardware acceleration, did you close VLC and reopen it? (I'm not entirely sure if VLC manages to disable that on the fly). Also, you can try changing the video output (from automatic, to OpenGL or something else).
Is this a problem that has developed recently? Also what GPU? AMD/Intel/Nvidia?
@GNUxeava@fedi.absturztau.be @GNUxeava@mk.absturztau.be
Never mind, I found info in the dump, that you have Intel GPU and it is indeed trying to use software decoding.
@GNUxeava@fedi.absturztau.be @GNUxeava@mk.absturztau.be
This could explain why it kills both mpv and VLC, although I don't know if it would be just for webm...
I've never seen something quite like what you're experiencing. Nothing I come across seems to fit.
@GNUxeava@fedi.absturztau.be @GNUxeava@mk.absturztau.be
Do you have any opus files lying around, see if it's specifically the video or audio streams that are causing this.
@GNUxeava@fedi.absturztau.be @GNUxeava@mk.absturztau.be
Try a sample from here
@GNUxeava@fedi.absturztau.be @GNUxeava@mk.absturztau.be
Well that's interesting... your VLC might be borked in multiple ways then, cause my VLC plays opus just fine.
But at least we're pretty sure now that it's the video stream that's causing the issue.
@GNUxeava@fedi.absturztau.be @GNUxeava@mk.absturztau.be
I'm running out of ideas... try live booting into a different distro, see if it will play the files with whatever video player & drivers it has by default.
@GNUxeava@fedi.absturztau.be @GNUxeava@mk.absturztau.be
Then maybe it's something wrong with your distro. Try going to whatever support forum they have.
