The reason/excuse USA used since WWII was basically "with great power comes great responsibility".
Because they saw themselves wielding a great power, American leadership saw themselves responsible for keeping some semblance of peace in the world, so they put their noses in any potential conflict thinking it would help.
Reality proved though that this approach works about as well as UN, which is to say, it doesn't.

I am sympathetic to the general idea of "if you're doing that good as a nation, you have a responsibility to help other countries achieve peace and prosperity too", and I still agree with it on principle, but when USA had so many failed attempts at this, I think it's safe to say: it's time to stop. I won't blame you for not trying. You've tried more than enough times, and you constantly failed miserably. You're only making things worse... please stop America. Please stop...
