Well my landlord came by with the Orkin man and I asked her about the pet deposit.
(Cornbread was locked in my room and luckily kept quiet)
She said that before I get the animal I need to pay the deposit and provide records that it's up to date on all of its shots. Also there are weight limits. I said it's a cat so weight limits shouldn't be an issue. Then she said, "Oh then it needs to be declawed or defanged or whatever it is you do to cats. I don't really know what all is in the policy. I'll get you a copy of the policy."
That has me worried. I hope she's just mistaken about that but if cats are required to be declawed then I'm definitely going to challenge that. Shouldn't be hard to get a note from the doctor that says that's actually animal abuse. Especially since even the humane society and ASPCA say so as well.

Gonna have to call the vet to get a quote for how much all of this will cost.
Still, I can't imagine the policy requires cats to be declawed. That'd just be bonkers.

Someone probably just decided that should be policy because they assumed the procedure was harmless. I would highlight how declawing involves ripping a lot of nerve endings and can cause the cats lasting pain
And also how much damage can a cat really do? They can mess up furniture if they don't have a scratching post, but furniture is yours. And carpet is too durable for a cat to be able to mess up. What's their interest in needing a cat to be declawed?
Can a cat fuck up carpet? We had cats growing up and I don't remember that happening.
