It would be a good idea to have a look on xda forums for whatever phone you have, to see if anyone else had similar problems.
If the phone is older and doesn't get regular Android updates anymore, a software issue is indeed unlikely, but doesn't hurt having a quick look on xda. But even as a hardware issue, that's really odd.

It's technically possible that it's just a fault in the local area, but I'm assuming Pasture isn't a shut in, and tried to use the phone in other places around town.

@alyx @pasture i had this happen to me with an older phone, t-mobile dropped support for some 4g bands that my phone relied on (nationwide across their whole network) and it caused very poor connectivity everwhere

had to get a new phone eventually. but that was a fairly old phone, samsung s4 and only supported a handful of 4g/LTE bands.

current 1+6 phone supports like 20 4g/LTE bands

@alyx @pasture there are android settings in developer mode where you can actually look up this info. see which bands your phone supports, make sure it's set to automatic, and cross check that against the supported bands in the network.
