Well... DVD-RAM was a standard for a while. And Windows did do that USB ReadyBoost thing. I think theoretically you could have an USB based cache system, but you'd need to use high quality flash or memory chips to see any results. And at that point you're better off just buying more RAM or a (better) SSD.
