Your word processing example doesn't work at all, because I actually have an interest in writing properly in that context. I don't, and no one sane has, an interest in # every word on social media. The only ones who would benefit from it are the owners of the platform. The more hashtags being used, the bigger the chance people reading a post are drawn into an infinite hell of checking out all the hashtags. Like how people will waste eternity, jumping from Wikipedia page to Wikipedia page, just from clicking on hyperlinks.

Maybe the best analogy, is comparing it with lootboxes in certain games. You could be perfectly able to play and complete the game without them, but if you were to receive constant notifications to partake in them, we'd see it as abusive and manipulative behavior.
