That's very interesting. I wonder how come this is not something you often hear about. Dogs experience a lot of the world through smell, so they'll certainly notice the change. I don't see how this kind of drastic hormone treatment wouldn't change the odor your body naturally produces, so they'd end up appearing as a complete stranger to a dog.
Or maybe even worse, the dog will pick up a weird mix of this new strange person with a faint after smell of their old owner, which might confuse it even more. "Why does this stranger have the smell of my owner on him, while my owner has been missing for months? Did he do something to drive my owner away?". Animals can get jealous, and they can figure out that something is up when they smell something strange on you, or if they smell you on someone else.
