YouTube is serving up hours of continuous ads for some, but Google says it's not a bug

Hours of unskippable ads show up for some YouTube users, and Google confirms why

>YouTube ads are now unskippable and can last for several hours, jsut to deter users with adblockers.

Lmao my ad blocking setup is working fine.

>Google is cracking down on freeloaders by showing excessively long ads to promote premium subscriptions.

That's hilarious. It's been years since I've seen an ad on YouTube.

>YouTube is emphasizing the importance of ads to support creators.

Step 1. Adblock
Step 2. Watch via mpv
Step 3. Download via yt-dlp
Step 4. ???
Step 5. Profit

They really don't seem to get it. The reason people do all this is because the ads they serve have become more obnoxious, more intrusive, and more stupid than TV ads. (not to mention the borderline illegal or scam ones).
I do remember the days when I was using an adblock extension, but I consciously chose to disable it for YouTube because the ads were tolerable, and I appreciated the site for what it offered.

I know what they could actually do to force people to watch ads, but it seems they're still too stupid to figure it out or implement it. They need to directly inject the ads into the video stream.

@alyx @j also more repetitive

I don't know for US users, but in Canada, Twitch would usually serve me the same shitty 2-3 ads and as said, they usually sucked harder than TV ads used to be

I stopped going on Twitch when blocking ads became impossible

No ads for me
@coolboymew

If I can’t block the ads I’ll just not use it at all. Simple.

@alyx @j

@coolboymew @j I'm getting the same repetitive issue in Europe, but I just assumed the ad market is small here, so there won't be much variety. And since US is bigger, this particular issue with internet ads might be just localized here. But maybe it's more common than I though.

@alyx @j I had assumed it was going to be a problem most other places than perhaps the US. It's terrible, there's less variety on a given day on a particular website than TV used to have, it's really annoying

@coolboymew@shitposter.world @alyx@gameliberty.club @j@shitposter.world All ads sucked even tv commercials.

Any exception is usually reserved for super bowl commercials and that one freecreditreport.com commercial.

@weeble @j @alyx I don't quiiiiite agree, but some of them perhaps had a stockholm effect

I just feel like the ads we get on the net are just generally especially bad

@coolboymew@shitposter.world @j@shitposter.world @alyx@gameliberty.club You see in the 80's, most saturday morning cartoons were practically commercials. So when an actual commercial came on you didn't notice.

That's why you have fonder memories.

@weeble

It has only gotten worse over time, but yes, in the 80s the saturday morning cartoons were basically toy advertisements. The really weird thing was the poor allocation of ad spots on occasion though. Sometimes there was random bleed-over from geriatric demographic adverts which I assume assumed your grandparents might also be up and in the room.
