Reminder that SARS and other deadly diseases break out of Chinese biolabs on a regular basis. The genius who thought that leaving Western Bioweapon development to the Chinese should be flogged in public.

Depends on how you define "engineered".
If you're like Thunderf00t, that pretends the only way to mess with viruses is CRISPR, then the evidence so far seems to be still that it hasn't been engineered that way.

The issue is, there are other ways to do gain-of-function, and change viruses. Easiest being, just let it replicate a bunch, while in the presence of all sorts of tissue from various animals. This wouldn't leave any clear sign of engineering, like CRISPR.

@alyx They were working with wild bat samples from some cave near a village where people complained about severe flus.

The people working there mishandled the samples and sold them to wet markets and ignored most security protocols.
