It's hilarious to see how foreigners deeply misunderstand the political situation in Romania, and how transparent they are in trying to use Romania's shit for a propaganda video against EU. And a bad propaganda video at that.

Some Indian sounding bloke is trying to convince the world that a single Court of Appeal ruling against a decision of the Constitution Court has any merit.
To put it in a context Americans can understand, it's the equivalent to how your courts tried to control how Trump conducts immigration policy. Basically the Appeal Court has no power over the Constitution Court. In fact, no court and neither any other state institution have any power over decisions made by the Constitution Court, just like nobody has power over what the US Supreme Court decides.

And in fact, by the time this stupid video came out, the decision of the Appeal Court was already overturned, and the judge responsible for it is being investigated by his peers (a council of other judges that we have as an official institution) to make sure his decision wasn't influenced by corruption or political bias, or something like that.

There's a lot wrong with what happened at the end of last year, and this year, in Romania, but doing bad propaganda, and trying to use our country for your right-wing grift against EU, isn't helpful.
It serves only to discredit the people here who are upset with the cancelling of an election without a valid motivation, and evidence to back up the reason.

@alyx The decision barring Diana Șoșoacă from running was if anything even more egregious than the one against Georgescu - at first the scumbag court straight up didn't even justify the decision, and later on they motivated it by not citing foreign interference or criminality, but literally just saying that Șoșoacă's opinions disqualify her from running, because you're not allowed to oppose NATO and the EU apparently.

@ChristiJunior
Yup. I think Șoșoacă is a complete joke of a person, but that decision was absolutely atrocious. At this point, you might as well straight out admit that EU is a fascist superstate, and all speech against EU government is illegal.
You can't possibly say about a state that it is independent if it is not allowed to decide on what alliances it makes with other states, and how can a state make those decisions if the elected politicians are not allowed to have opinions about such alliances?

>but it's in the Constitution, and the president is required to ensure the Constitution is upheld
Yeah, and the Constitution can require change and improvements. The president is also required to able to be smart enough and competent enough to recognize if that's the case and issue recommendations.
We don't elect politicians to blindly uphold laws put into place years or decades ago, we elect them to be able to change things when it is needed.
Instead, the Court basically forbade politicians from ever looking to improve the fundamental law.

What a fucking joke...

@alyx But other than that, yeah, the idea that unless you support the current laws you oppose "rule of law" and shouldn't be allowed to run for office is insanely tyrannical - it literally rules out peaceful change.

God, I hope Simion is elected president, or at least that Antonescu the Establishment blob loses badly.

@ChristiJunior
Haven't payed attention to polls. I think Simion is leading, and Nicușor is second. I don't think Antonescu has a chance to get in the 2nd round.
And between Simion and Nicușor, it's hard to say what will happen. On one hand, I don't think Antonescu or Lasconi voters would all go to Nicușor, but I don't see them going for Simion either. But for anyone who genuinely believes the fear-mongering, they'll vote for Nicușor, and will give him a good shot at beating Simion in the second term.

@alyx The polls are all over the place, some show Antonescu in 2nd place and winning round 2, others show him badly trailing the likes of Nicușor and Ponta. The only thing consistent is that Simion is always #1. I assume those polls only ask people living in Romania, so Antonescu might be overperforming in them, I can't imagine many Romanians living abroad voting for a backstabbing PSD stooge.

Nicușor is being hurt by Lasconi refusing to bow out of the race, which could prove fatal come election day. On one hand I understand her being so bitter, the scumbag court completely screwed her over (she had a very good chance of winning against Georgescu before the court turned him into a martyr), but at the same time her inability to put her ego aside and support the strongest alternative to Simion and Antonescu doesn't speak well of her.

@ChristiJunior
I don't blame her. Her party literally back-stabbed her. And while I like literally no one in these elections, the truth is, she proved herself back in November, when she came in second, ahead of all pro-EU candidates.
The logical move in my view would have been, for all pro-EU parties to stand behind her, and show support for her, if this pro-EU/NATO stance was so critically important, like they claim it is. Like why the hell are you looking for new candidates, and dragging Antonescu from the mothballs, if you already have Lasconi, who you know could get people's votes? This is not a matter of polls saying she had support, she literally got the votes once already.

I'm not in the mood to talk more on this, but the way I see it, literally everyone in this race, their minds have been broken by paranoia.
AUR was basically build on paranoia, and Simion is there by default. USR have their own brand of paranoia, and their new favorite leech Nicușor is suddenly inventing conspiracy theories that someone is buying bots to follow his TikTok, and somehow that damages his reach (and Ponta is making the same accusation). Antonescu and crowd are full in the "Călin/Simion/AUR are gonna pull us out of EU/NATO" paranoia, or the even more pathetic "they're with the Russians".

So there is no option where something improves with this election. The best chance we've got might literally be if the elections get cancelled again, and that forces US to intervene in Europe in some way. Otherwise, it doesn't matter, because they were all driven to insanity, and they'll all do something stupid if they get into office.
