If I had cared for a child from birth to 5 years old I would probably just continue until the child was in teens. At least 12 or 13

I wouldn't. Or rather, I couldn't. That level of betrayal from the mother, I can't handle constantly being reminded of that every time I look at the kid. I'd probably either be constantly bitter, constantly fighting with the mother because of this, or both. In the end, it wouldn't be a good environment for the kid to grow up in.
