I'm running out of ideas... try live booting into a different distro, see if it will play the files with whatever video player & drivers it has by default.

Well that's interesting... your VLC might be borked in multiple ways then, cause my VLC plays opus just fine.

But at least we're pretty sure now that it's the video stream that's causing the issue.

Do you have any opus files lying around, see if it's specifically the video or audio streams that are causing this.

This could explain why it kills both mpv and VLC, although I don't know if it would be just for webm...

I've never seen something quite like what you're experiencing. Nothing I come across seems to fit.
