You're comparing American atheist culture with atheist cultures of other nations. It's not gonna manifest in the same way.
The prime reason why I opposed woke culture since back when we were still talking about "social justice", "intersectional feminism" or just plain "feminazis" is because becoming an atheist made me recognize wokeness was a cult, a non-theistic religion. So atheism born out of actual rationality, instead of some kind of edgy "I'm gonna be rebellious against Christianity" can protect you from the woke mind virus, because you learn to see the patterns repeating.

And even in America, I've even seen both kinds of atheists. I've seen atheists who were obsessed with Christianity and payed no attention to Islam (because their atheism was not born from opposing religions and cults, but because some Christian sect pissed them off) that became woke, and I've seen atheists that spent time denouncing Islam or other religions too, that now oppose wokeness to various degrees.

Romania is overwhelmingly Christian today (almost 90%), despite living through one of the worst European communist regimes. So I doubt it's purely an effect of communism for you guys.

Maybe of all the AI models involved in this, maybe that's the one that uses up most power. And since redubbing all of YouTube is a massive undertaking... I can understand why they'd do it like this. It's still stupid though.

Yeah... so besides not using shitty TTS for auto-dubbing, something else I would do is add a button to manually request auto-dubbing for an older video.

With how much content gets uploaded to YT constantly, I get the feeling auto-dubbing will be a thing for new videos, and older videos will stay as they are. Or if they do get the feature, they'll be at the bottom of the work queue.

So instead, have an option accessible somewhere, to request a video you're watching be put at the top of the queue. And then you get a timer for how long it will take for it to get translated. It would probably be a matter of minutes, so you'll be able to restart the video with dubbed audio afterwards.

Man, was I ever wrong....
I assumed they would be using AI voices for these, cause that's all the rage now. I didn't try to open the video, cause who wants to watch some German thing. But no. They're voiced with Google's shitty TTS.
The one time I thought YouTube would be doing something somewhat cool, and they blow it.

Maid Mint... at least it tastes like mint...

@Wrest
First time I saw the program Daemon Tools I thought it was a weird name to give to something. But considering how I was using it... it wasn't that strange. Still, never thought there were actual demons involved.

Nah, this is too much fun for me. Otherwise, I'd need to pay attention to European politics, and the real potential of EU turning out to be the 4th Reich.

Weirdest Kiwifarms reference ever. It's all the way at the last minute of the interview, if you want to skip to it. The interview itself is pretty interesting too.

Gordon doesn't need to hear all that, he's a highly trained autist!

@Lavaearth As far as I can tell, she's not pissed about it. So I don't really care either.

@leo
Had a quick look just now, cause I haven't tested them in a while. I think English transcriptions have gotten noticeably better. Only tried 1 video right now, but it was on point. No complaints.
But I tried one in my native language too, and... not good enough to try to translate them. You kinda need perfect transcripts if you want to put into a translation model. Still, a bit better than I expected.

I expect more popular languages like German and French to be worked on more though, and they're probably at good enough level to do the dubbing. But I don't speak other languages to be able to make a judgement on how good things are.

@leo
Honestly, I'd be satisfied if they just gave people better translated captions. Last time I tried even just regular auto transcribed (not translated) captions, they were still bad. I don't need full dubbing if there's some foreign language thing I'm interested in. Good subtitles are more than enough.
