So let's talk a bit about why this laptop is from hell: it's everything wrong with Windows, Linux, and modern laptops.
Windows forces a driver update that breaks the switchable drivers. This isn't a new problem, but it's bad here because the drivers are already buggy and if you install the old ones on new Windows it BSODs. So you need an old kernel to properly use it, I'm going to see if 1809 works (I forgot how long ago this was) and I might even need to use 1607 LTSB. Worst comes to worst, 8.1 with the dated ASUS drivers.
Linux has a bug where you cannot force amdgpu on the newer GCN chip, you're stuck with TeraScale because of the iGPU. This means you're locked out of Vulkan and Proton/Wine using DXVK.
Switchable Graphics mean you cannot disable the onboard GPU (this luxury is reserved for mobile workstations).
Worst of all, nobody cares about this piece of e-waste. Not Linux devs, not Windows devs (especially not with 10 EOL soon), and especially not ASUS who would prefer that you buy a new ASUS laptop.
I got this cheap at a thrift store to experiment with a while back and put it aside as it was frustrating me so hard. I want a challenge so my goal is to get this laptop to do something. It has a DGPU (even if a comically poor one).
