As bad as these internet laws are, the hard reality is these tech companies want to act like Philip Morris.
I personally have two beliefs: that these internet laws are bullshit, but also I 100% know why they're pushing them: because tech companies have proven time and time again they care as much as tobacco or pharma companies care.

They want a band-aid fix for a real problem that only fucks everyone over.

@PurpCat That's very apt, and it really says a lot that they had these systems to block UK users the instant that came into effect. When the various porn bans in US states started, I always thought it was interesting that instead of the multi million, billion dollar porn conglomerates trying to fight it legally, they just went along with it, threw their hands up saying "don't look at me, it's the icky politicians!"

@arc What I've noticed is that tech companies do the same exact thing. For example, just like the "tobacco ads" that literally say "A court ordered XYZ to state" as a very malicious way of reminding you who told them, tech companies will either do the cheapest/laziest/easiest to bypass possible way for court orders with the UK rules for example (face scans that can easily be bypassed with a video game even), or by gimping features (iPhone and the browser engines).

Case in point. Apple is very petty about the browser engine shit, so they've geofenced it to the EU only. You can't have Gecko/Blink because they're only doing it in the EU. This is the kind of bullshit these companies will do.
