so i've got an idea to repurpose an old laptop into a local backup for people in my house to use.

my idea is to partition the drive into chunks for each person (so everyone gets 15gb or something). the laptop is running linux.

i'm just looking for the most elegant way to do this, preferably with passwords for each user in order to access their files. i know i could set up syncthing in certain folders, but i know that wouldn't be super accessible for most if not all of my roommates and they would probably never use it if they had to manually enter things all the time.

does anyone have some ideas on a way i could implement this in a smooth way? preferably a way that could send and receive files too, that would be awesome.

@beardalaxy syncthing is the best solution. Set it up to share the user profile and forget about it. they'll never know it's there and it'll sync even when they're not at home.

tried it on total computer illiterates, it works fine, just have them store files in the windows folders

don't partition the disk, just set up a system user for each person, run an instance of syncthing for each person and enable home directory quotas. This way backups are much easier and you can change quotas easily afterwards

if you don't like one syncthing instance per person, set up one system user for all but use file system quotas per directory. less flexible because you'll have to add everyone's devices to the same syncthing but this will give you a single syncthing admin account to deal with
