david was too stupid to realize that he could still get lucy to the moon without becoming a cyberpsycho. could have kept running normal ass gigs, toned down on the cyberware when it started to affect him, or even sacrificed himself in a way that didn't involve many other people getting sacrificed too. david is one of the most selfish characters i've ever seen because he doesn't think about the way his actions will impact anyone else, even the people he supposedly cares about, he just has his sights set on doing whatever it takes for him to feel fulfilled. he thinks of himself as some godlike person that the world revolves around just because he can handle more chrome than most people, and when he finally starts having issues with it he's too selfish and prideful to strip it back, just like maine. he learns nothing throughout the show and his character arc is horribly unsatisfying.
