@shmibs @Moon every single member of the church has all of their information on record. this is for, as for their claims, two main reasons:
1) making sure everybody is accounted for in terms of church callings, tithes, and for the administration positions to get in contact with members to establish those things and set up meetings
2) establishing a better sense of community within your local church, where anyone can reach anybody else. they used to have church registries for all the members at a local church, we had one hanging up on our wall for years with everyone's name/number/address in it. if someone needed something, they'd have everyone's numbers and could call people up to get some help.
@shmibs @Moon technically, yes. you don't have to pay tithing to be a member, but you do have to pay tithing if you want to go to the temple, which you need to do in order to go to heaven (essentially). but they won't call you up about it or anything if you don't pay. it's mainly for records' sake at this point.
@Moon @shmibs at least when i went to church, it was required to pay tithing to get your temple recommend. maybe in practice they don't actually care, but i always was under the impression that while i could lie about not jerking it i couldn't lie about not giving them money, because they would actually know if i did or not.
tithing is enforced?
