@chjara@snowdin.town Don't all of them already do this by law?
@SuperDicq If you're referencing COPPA. It just prevents American companies from knowingly collecting data on those under 13. (or i think technically there is a way for them to do that.. but they seem to have collectively decided it's easier to ban under 13's)
@kittycat@mastodon.lol I don't live in America, we have different but also a little bit similar laws.
I'm personally not bothered by people under 18 (but above 13) on a platform. A lot of teenagers can be very mature, when I was 13 I also hanged out with cool adults on the internet in a non weird way and I wish for teenagers today to be be able to have that same experience.
I'm not going to change my behavior on here however, if a teenager sees me saying things or talking about some topic that is inappropriate for them I do not consider it my fault, but their parent's for not properly supervising them. I'm not here to babysit your children.
@fluffy@social.handholding.io Meh, I think having people from different generations come together is good.
I often only talk to people that are in my own age bubble and speaking to people from different generations, older and younger than you, I find very useful to be able understand other perspectives.
If I would only talk to people within my own age range I would probably become a misunderstanding senile old man very quickly, and I really don't want to be someone like that.
@fluffy@social.handholding.io You'll get stuff about highschool, something people over 18 usually no longer have.
@fluffy@social.handholding.io A few weeks ago for example my misskey instance got randomly got joined by a bunch of Japanese highschool students.
The reason why, which I was able to deceiver using my very bad Japanese skills, turns out is because for most of them the only computer they owned was a laptop loaned to them by the school and it had very strict internet filters on it that blocks any form of social media.
Because of that reason they hop on various Misskey instances to avoid internet censorship. By now my Misskey instance is unfortunately also banned by the Japanese school network so they have probably joined to a different instance once again.
I would've never known about this slice of daily life for current highschool students if I just underageb& them on sight instead of tried to talk to them.
@SuperDicq @fluffy the problem comes in when your instance has porn/hentai on it xD
@beardalaxy@gameliberty.club @fluffy@social.handholding.io No, as I said before I don't take responsibility for that. It's their parent's fault for giving them unsupervised internet access if they just happen to see anything that shocks them.
Also I don't think it is a problem at all if a teenager happens to see porn. Sex is simply part of life, and teenagers also have to deal with that fact. I don't understand why we have to keep it hidden until they are 18.
@SuperDicq @fluffy ehh maybe it's one thing if people are just uploading things to a porn website and it's totally the teenager that's seeking it out (and clicking the "i'm 18" button so the site can't run into legal problems), but with social media you run into the risk of people actually sending stuff to them directly or, worst case, vice versa.
is it your problem if it happens and you're not the one doing it? not really, but imo it's better to avoid.
@beardalaxy@gameliberty.club @fluffy@social.handholding.io Oh yeah if I see someone sending inappropriate things to underage people using my instances that's definitely a ban.
But if they happen to see random porn on the timeline (while it is marked as such obviously) I don't see a problem with that.
