From what I found, it was over the iPhone prototype leak which was their property.

I've read about the same thing happening back in the old days of Chinese XDKs and dudes leaking prototypes from Partnernet or making cheats on XBL. I know Activision and maybe MSFT lawyers would show up at your door and demand their property back. Keep in mind console devkits are technically property of the console owners, but eventually they fixed their security and just locked out the devkit functions on sold consoles as opposed to trying and failing to brick consoles or get them back with force.

Apple is a company very careful to be secret about the next big devices leaking, so this absolutely made them shit their pants both with the drunk bar story and the leak afterwards.

Put it this way, I know someone who worked in the industry at a similar company. For work he had the same thing as Apple, he would carry around proto phones and use them daily to both "test" them in the real world and to see how they worked and all. One day he lost his phone in a hotel room. He found it later on in his suitcase but he was scared shitless that if he lost it, he'd be fired and probably blackballed from the industry. That was a massive event in that industry for a reason.
