someone was asking me about getting in to twitch streaming. debating if i should tell them to order a K240 and a mod mic.

i have not personally used modmics (@shebang do though) and i don’t like recommending anything i haven’t used :blobcatthonking:

@icedquinn I'm not sure either. Mine probably works well but I don't know anything about audio quality. It's pretty much the standard for VR people but I don't know outside of that. I assume its probably considered good but I can't tell anything about audio.
@shebang for broadcast i use a c-2 or an xm8500 which are basically studio mics but i also use a cheapo interface (i dunno that a scarlett would actually sound any better but people seem to insist they do)

for casual use just the laptop mic really. sometimes jbl or these little skullcandy in-ears.

i've been told by @sjw that the skullcandys don't sound great. the blutoofs are more geared to phone calls in public/noisy environments so i'm not surprised.

right now this person is using ome like 8 year old gamecoms with generic boom mic so :blobcatterrified: although those gamecoms were camfy as hell when they were still made
@icedquinn @shebang Yeah, Skullcandy is the lower-end equivalent of Beats.

Not great and overpriced for what you're getting
@sjw @shebang these were ~30$ so i'm pretty satisfied with the quality/$

@icedquinn @sjw @shebang the good thing about skullcandy is that they have a lifetime warranty, so if they break you can get a new pair free of charge. that's about it, though. there are other good headphones to be had at the same price points. gotta' say though, i have a pair of the original heshes and they still work to this day, over a decade later.

i use a modmic and with just a little bit of EQ you can get it sounding pretty damn good. you definitely don't want to plug it directly into the PC's mic input though, you'll want some sort of USB interface or a dedicated sound card to eliminate noise. it is definitely serviceable without EQ as well.

the only thing i don't like about the modmic is that it's a condenser mic and not a dynamic one, but if you want a headset with a dynamic mic it's gonna' be at least $200 and that's not going to get you as good of sound quality, plus you aren't going to be able to use them for anything else.

for the money and convenience put up against the quality, modmic is awesome.

@beardalaxy @sjw @shebang was looking at maybe slapping the usb model on to a k240 but eeh.

probably will wait until they're more active about it. though i don't think k240s will stay cheap forever
