@colonelj @marine in br2049, replicants (synthetic humans) are given false memories of themselves as a child because they are "born" as adults and having childhood memories makes them "more human."
gosling's character, K, has a memory that he thinks actually happened, so he goes to the person who creates the memories and she tells him that it's not a fake one, it's a real memory. this whole time, K has been living as a replicant when he might in fact be a human and that's what causes him to break down.
