* Best match of Round 1: Shantae VS Tamamo (Monster Girl Quest)
Both this match and Shanoa VS Tifa were 50% - 50% matches, but this one came first (meaning it had the bigger impact), it was the closer one (decided by a single vote instead of two), and had more controversy surrounding it (with a tiebreaker poll even being announced prematurely, before I actually learned how to see the exact vote totals). But above all else, it actually had two sides giving it their all, rather than one of the contestants being a lazy girl who expected her big name and star power to automatically get her through – don’t worry Tifa, you’ll get your due soon enough, but it will be punishment, not praise.
Back to Shantae-Tamamo, this match was so good that by the end of it, I didn’t even care about who would actually win, I was just excited to see how this thrilling battle would end, and that’s how you KNOW you got a classic on your hands.
* Worst match of Round 1: Seele VS Marnie
You know, usually in a squash match, it’s at least interesting to see just how much the character on the right side of the stomp dominates, you’re impressed by her power and curious about how this win will measure up against the win of her Round 2 opponent. Not so here. It quickly became apparent that Marnie was only winning big because Seele was extremely weak, and while Marnie definitely seemed to enjoy decent support, nothing she did in this match gives any indication of her being able to even slow down 2B. Hell, Marnie will probably struggle to do as well as Super-Yukiko did.
Also, for this stage of the tournament, the vote totals were dogshit, and Seele got like NO support in the match thread, no pictures, no nothing, only a whole lot of “who the hell even IS this girl?”. Sad.
* Star of Round 1: Patchouli Knowledge
Lots of girls impressed in Round 1 – Samus easily scored the round’s most dominant victory, Reimu comfortably doubled Cerberus, Pyra scored 64% against an opponent with even bigger boobs than herself (and Hoshino’s victory suggests that Blue Archive is kinda legit, despite being a Gacha game), Shanoa scored an epic upset win, Tamamo (Fate/Extra) dominated one of gaming’s most iconic Lolis, Ryza finally showed her true power, and 2B broke 60% despite MASSIVE rallying against her that resulted in a huge vote total.
However, Patchouli did it all – she won big, against a strong opponent with an enthusiastic fanbase, AND boasted the biggest vote total of the whole round, which means she also had the greatest number of people voting for her (remember, Samus’ match only got like 1/3rd of Patchouli-Midna’s votes). It was a worldbeater-performance, and instantly turned library girl into the favorite in her match against 2nd Seed May, and a real contender to win the whole tournament.
Also, SuperSnekFriend's support topic for Patche was just on a whole 'nother level.
* Flop of Round 1: Tifa
I could have picked Ranni or Dawn, high seeds who lost, or Seele, who looked like absolute garbage in her loss against an opponent of middling strength. However, Ranni was a relatively new and untested character, Dawn went up against someone who was always expected to be far stronger than her seeding indicated, and there was always that chance of Seele only being liked by a handful of Fediverse users who just so happened to show up during the Nominations.
Tifa however, is one of THE most iconic gaming Waifus of all time, and under normal circumstances, she’d be one of the top 3 favorites to win this whole tournament. But it’s not just that she lost, in round 1, it’s HOW she lost – she didn’t lose to the power of Touhou, Fluffy Tails or Cunny, she lost to a fellow adult black-haired beauty from a “normal” video game, just one with only a fraction of the sales of Final Fantasy VII. And she did so while getting blown out in terms of vocal support and rallying, AND after blowing a seemingly safe lead. Tifa’s natural Fedi strength, while not close to what it is in other places, is still significantly above that of Shanoa, but Shanoa fans just fought way harder, and wanted the win way more. If anyone had posted Italian Tifa memes during the match, Tifa probably wins. Anyone posts the clip of Tifa calling Barret “a retard”, Tifa probably wins. Tifa just choked this match away in more ways than I can count, and THAT’S why she’s the flop of Round 1, and really, the flop of the tournament.
