Brother wasn't able to find a Vita in Japan. Probably didn't look very hard but I didn't expect him to on his honeymoon lol. He did say he got 2 things for me though, and what they are is a secret. They're on the way home now so I'll see them soon and I'll let you guys know what Japan souvenirs I got!

Once I get my money back from them I'll start looking for a Vita around here. I considered just getting Android on my Switch instead, and buying some hall effect sticks, since it would be a lot cheaper to go that route and I'd get a little bit of extra juice out of it. However, the thing that interests me the most about the Vita is how portable it is. I can tuck it in a pocket of my backpack or my hoodie like I did with my PSP back in the day. The reason I don't carry my Switch around with me is that it's too big and I need a carrying case for it. That's also why, while I think the Steam Deck is cool, I'd never get one. Too big. If Nintendo's Switch 2 had a cheaper version without the screen I'd get it instead.

There are also just some Vita games I want to play that aren't going to run well on the Switch under emulation. So I think my mind's made up. Really don't want to spend over $100 on it though so I'll have to be selective.

There are also some cheap handheld emulation devices, but again, they're not gonna be able to play Vita games.

@beardalaxy It’s a nice little portable, don’t forget to budget for a memory stick if you find an oled, I see imports on theBay for ~105 USD so 100 is realistic, maybe you can get lucky on marketplace or something

@maylay yeah the actual budget is closer to $130, for a micro sd and sd2vita. you can apparently hack an OLED without needing a legit memory stick now.

i found a decent one on amazon JP just barely for about $90 shipped :) think i'm gonna' pull the trigger on it. worst case, if the screen has burn in or something, i can deal with it for a little bit until i can spend the $30 for a replacement screen.

@beardalaxy If burn in is your biggest concern then you are probably good, expect some mura, but the screen holds up pretty well considering how much static images like life bars and timers would likely be on the screen for hours on a gaming console, maybe a display model would have it but would probably be sold as junk if it's coming from Japan

@maylay yeah the listing said it was in "acceptable" condition, but if anime figures are anything to go by then "acceptable" is damn near flawless to them xD

i know OLED burn in isn't nearly as bad as anyone says. wulff den proved that pretty well with his test of the switch OLED screen.

i have seen some vitas that have pretty bad burn in, but with some pretty weird cases like the petz logo or something lol, so yeah perhaps those were more for display.

@beardalaxy Sounds good, it is going to be fun, let me know if you need any info, I'm running 3.60 on mine so most of my experience is with that firmware, vita hacks guide has pretty much everything you need to get started as you probably know

@maylay heck yeah man. i have done this to quite a few consoles over the years haha.

actually modded about 15 wiis for smash tournaments once upon a time, that was fun xD a bunch of them had weird hardware and software issues to figure out, was a bit challenging but i love doing it.
