Webp isn't the problem. The adoption, or lack thereof, of Webp is the problem. And it sucks.
@SuperDicq I mean it doesn't really seem much different to me, other than I guess gifs look better? Like, does it even need to exist when we have what we do already?
@beardalaxy@gameliberty.club Gif has many problems and limitations, gif was already superseded by the png format.
I don't think there is a single situation where a gif file looks better than a webp file except in cherry picked examples where you're comparing a very heavily compressed webp with a top quality gif file that uses the full 256 color range to its fullest extend.
@beardalaxy@gameliberty.club Another problem is that nowadays almost everyone understands "gifs" to be just a name for shortform animations.
In reality the .gif file format is nearly extinct. Nearly all of the "gifs" you see presented by social media applications actually use more modern formats such as apng, webp, webm or mp4 in reality.
They are lying to you about gifs.
@beardalaxy@gameliberty.club IT'S ALL FAKE, IT IS ALL A LIE, THERE NEVER WERE ANY GIFS :antichrist:
(example: telegram)
@Suiseiseki@freesoftwareextremist.com Mastodon does the mp4 to gif thing as well by the way.
But yeah most of the other fedi servers still use regular old real gif.
@beardalaxy
libwebp is easy to use (even to the point of only needing a single function call) and webp has good adoption in FOSS applications. As is always the case, proprietary software is a curse that holds everyone back
@beardalaxy@gameliberty.club Sometimes I see people hate on webp because "Google is in control of it".
Personally I do not care who invented the standards as long as the stanards are free.
