It's just that the second does the whole psychological shit with all the symbolism and how it's all "manifestations of guilt" and they experience different things. It ultimately has nothing to do with the first one other than the name of the setting and game design. First game is just demon shit and the third being a sequel to the first, kind of tries to have the symbolism and what not, but it doesn't land because it can't be a follow up to the first while also being a follow up to the second and alot of people wanted it to just be another round of SH2.

@matty @MelGibsonafter4Beers @Jean_Philippe_Micheaux The ultimate product could have been extremely different from that too. Playable Teaser was extremely effective by itself. There was even a little online detective work being done in attempt to solve and finish it. The reward being a major game announcement. Problem was, allegedly and assuming my memory is right, Kojima had already misappropriated funds for MGS5 and some of that misappropriation was to make this. Kojima had basically announced a game that they never even agreed to produce and this pissed Konami off bad.

@Jean_Philippe_Micheaux @Matty @MelGibsonafter4Beers @Skringot after seeing what death stranding turned out to be, and finding out that the majority of the good writing in mgs wasn't even done by kojima, i am so fucking glad silent hills didn't get created in the end.
now we have blooper team making a remake of the best silent hill and "modernizing" it. i'm still hopeful for silent hill f and am especially intrigued about the one from annapurna. although it is unfortunate that they seem to be moving away from silent hill as a location with shf, it looks more like a fatal frame or forbidden siren game but i hope it'll still be good.
