the way i can describe tears of the kingdom is similar to one of those monstruous burgers that have like 4+ pieces of meat and all sorts of other shit

it's daunting to look at and you're not gonna be able to eat it in one sitting without putting your health at risk but given enough time you can finish it and be satisfied for a very VERY long time

@rlier23 I love zelda and I haven't wanted anything to do with it since before I forced myself to beat the game

@beardalaxy @rlier23 when you say you forced yourself to beat the game... do you mean that you made a beeline for Ganondorf without getting all the sages? Or did you force yourself to finish all the temples then go for Ganondorf?

@PonyPanda @rlier23 I was trying to 100% it but at a certain point I got really burnt out and didn't even want to play it anymore so I forced myself to finish up the game. There's too much stuff in the game and I tried to "eat it" too fast.

I got about 2/3 of the way done with the shrines, maybe half the light roots, no idea on the quests but I did a lot of them. Finished all the temples.

@PonyPanda @rlier23 I 100%d botw (minus every single korok seed) and had a good time doing it. So I figured it would be the same for TotK. It wasn't. There's a lot more game there.

@beardalaxy @rlier23 why do you think that was?

TotK had more "freebie" shrines with Rauru's blessing though they were usually for doing shrine quests. TotK also had more controlled shrines where you knew you were getting one bonus treasure chest. There also wasn't waggle puzzles or the Mirro Shaz Shrine.

Do you think that the shrines were better but the overworld exploration was lacking?
Certainly you can't be talking about From the Depths?

@PonyPanda @rlier23 i liked the shrines about as much as i liked them in botw i'd wager. i did like how a lot of them actually more or less took place in the overworld.

it was just the amount of stuff in general, not necessarily just the shrines. the side quests, the treasure maps, there's literally always something to go do even if you're already doing something else. eventually it went from "holy shit this is awesome" to "holy shit this is overwhelming."

the depths were really cool for the first bit when i was still getting acquainted with them, but then sort of fell apart when i realized i was just walking around in a vast, empty, dark world. nowhere near as interesting as hyrule or the sky after the first 10 hours or so. what's this? another chest that has a shitty 1 armor item that just looks cool? and i had to defeat 10 lynels in a row to get it or some shit? yeah, not worth it.

i also didn't like the story much, or how the puppet/phantom zelda story played out in regards to the world and the NPCs. i thought it seemed really hacked together and not integrated very well. botw's story and overall atmosphere was much, much better, although i don't think i'd be able to go back and play it because the gameplay of totk is vastly improved.

i started out thinking the game was pretty much perfect but the longer i played it the more the magic wore off for me, i guess. and when the magic wore off, that's when i realized just how much shit was in the game and i stopped playing it for a bit. had to force myself to finish it.

@beardalaxy @rlier23
I agree with just about everything you said. The two things I disagree on are that I did enjoy the depths a bit. I thought it was just kino. I like that the depths was there to bring back the original exploration challenge of BotW in ranging, traversing difficult terrain and managing your stamina. In TotK, that's mostly gone and you can easily just paraglide out of the sky anywhere you need to. And the treasure of the Lynel colosseum isn't the armor piece you find. It's the Lynel drops. Two Silver Lynel horns and pounders, one White-Maned Lynel horn and pounder, three Savage Lynel bows and shields. Fucktonnes of Lynel hoofs for arrow fuses. Guts for armor upgrades. Fucktonnes of arrows. All there for you if you know how to parry and aim an arrow quickly.

But otherwise, yeah... there wasn't really anything that felt that rewarding. I couldn't help but wonder if they originally made it that enemy parts drops were weapon specific.

And I still think BotW is still very playable.
@PonyPanda @beardalaxy @rlier23 What possesses you people to write out like 15 paragraphs of fucking blathering nonsense

@micropenis @rlier23 @PonyPanda compensation, which seems to be something you would know about too.

@PonyPanda @beardalaxy i've been having quite a lot of fun but def my favorite parts are the cave systems
and also the building

as for the abyss it's interesting but yeh a bit empty except for the area surrounding the ruins where you get the autobuild upgrade
@beardalaxy @PonyPanda @rlier23 I think there will be a return to the classic format of Zelda and people can stop pretending this new era is really good and cutting edge
@colonelj @PonyPanda @beardalaxy this is the first time that you come into one of my posts and you did it in the most obnoxious way possible.

why don't you go back to pestering terrys balls?
@rlier23 @beardalaxy @colonelj it might not be obvious at first but me and the colonel are very similar people.
@rlier23 @PonyPanda @beardalaxy i had to unfollow them because after dealing with over a year of them mindlessly reposting russian propaganda on fedi, as if anyone here cares, they now decided to also mindlessly repost palestinian propaganda. the mind of a wignat is an enigma. what is gained from such actions besides reddit karma?
@colonelj @beardalaxy @rlier23 I don't think there will be a return to the old format and I don't think this generation was ever touted as being "cutting edge"

I think the next generation will combine traditional format with the current format. Instead of shrines giving you a fraction of a token for a vitality or stamina upgrade, the reward will be currency to unlock sequential gates in the parallel world that resembles the traditional linear Zelda games.
@beardalaxy @rlier23 Happened to me with BotW. I didn't play it again for 2 years after that. Then I returned and completed it.
