@Awoo @CatLord imo they aren't trying to take over Ukraine necessarily, they're just trying to put pressure on them until they give into their demands. If they were really trying to take territory they could have easily done it a long time ago.
The other option is that it hasn't been made very easy considering Ukraine has been backed by a shit ton of other countries and mercenaries.
Even still, Ukraine is being bled dry even with all of the help they are receiving. The territory doesn't matter and never did matter.

The Eastern areas are rich with resources, when compared with the Western regions it's no contest. In Spain, the Catalonian people grew tired of subsidizing the rest of the country. Autonomy would've unlocked all sorts of prosperity for them.
All sorts of infighting in the EU came from Greece not pulling their own weight. And, trying to seize what was once Poland would royally piss off NATO. So Russia is content with reunification? I imagine absorbing an area where the majority are Ukrainian-speaking would just lead to constant tension.
