My sister bought a smart tv... I'm totally and completely uninterested in it. If I ever use it it'd be for playing stuff off a USB stick.

@captain_arepa that's what it's for anyways. You should try and see if you can get invidious working on it

@McMongoose @captain_arepa the app i tried to use for this worked pretty well in general, but it wouldn't let me stay logged in and that was frustrating.

@beardalaxy @captain_arepa
I need to buy a new one, I couldn't connect this old shit to my lappy

@McMongoose @captain_arepa unless you're trying to go for an OLED i always recommend getting a TCL panel because they actually make the screens that samsung uses so they're pretty good, they just don't have any of samsung's weird processing bullshit. extremely cheap, too. downside is they use roku and you can't exactly break into that very easily, although there are apps you can install semi-unofficially using a web browser instead of the TV itself. that's how i got the invidious player.

or, you can get an android one that's able to sideload apps and that'll make your life a lot easier probably. i've never used one personally though so i can't vouch for them.

i know some companies still make dumb TVs still, but i don't know anything about their quality.

@beardalaxy @McMongoose @captain_arepa Android TV seems like the best way to watch shows offline (or sideloaded online), as building a Linux PC would be limited thanks to most HDR support being proprietary or experimental. Maybe get one that supports LineageOS (like the Shield TV)? A lot of those cheap Android boxes might have malware, and there's no way to replace the custom OS.

@berkberkman @McMongoose @captain_arepa I think if you're going to get an HDR display you should get an OLED anyway, HDR isn't worth it on an LED. I don't know shit about what OLEDs are good or not though lol, I just have a TV I like the look of and I'm cool with it until it dies.
