@poastoak @zero tragically, with current technology, nips would use LLMs and then not even notice that the pronouns are completely fucked up and heavily using 'they'. This trend was already apparent with pre-LLM machine translation. The era of "All your base" is forbidden to us now. Unreachable, like the Garden of Eden.
@beardalaxy @apropos @poastoak @zero Japanese has gendered pronouns in the first and third person, but it also has neutral ones, which are probably used more outside of dialogue-type text.

@Giga_Vril_Breaker @apropos @poastoak @zero Earlier this year SEGA announced a new female character in PSO2 NGS and the English narrator referred to her as "he" but in the actual game she's definitely a female. I know if you translated the Tears of the Kingdom Japanese website it would refer to Zelda as a male as well, which is obviously not true. Very interesting.

@beardalaxy @apropos @poastoak @zero Whatever causes these issues is most likely programmer bias being present in the code rather than the translator software being "too precise" or Japanese being "too confusing". Japanese has more gendered language, tbh, than English, and it's not just pronouns but even manner of speech, like verb endings, honorifics, stuff like that. You can most often even deduce the gender of a person from the way people speak to them. It's not super difficult to learn and get right most of the time, so in my mind there is only one possibility why software gets it wrong.
