Imagine living somewhere that has cute animals like this. Instead I have to avoid 100 spiders on my way outside, make sure there isn't a snake outside my front door, get my face mauled by Magpies once I finally make it outside and then have to wrestle the Goanna out of my car, only to realize that my car is out of fuel and the tank is full of Bull Ants.

@Awoo I'm sort of mystified that America does not get more shit for it's animals. Lots of venomous snakes, venimous lizards, Africanized honey bees, invasive fire ants, wild cats, hawk wasps, bears, wolves, coyotes, and plenty of large spiders, but everyone seems to ignore it.
@Elliptica @Awoo Venomous snakes/lizards are made of meat and leather, we just fucking eat them. Literally just wear proper protective clothes and you can pwn them with a shovel. Anyone who is working around them has antivenom on hand anyway, so it's sort of like

They can't actually bite you on their own (most spiders are like that actually), and instances when they do bite are because of the exact situation you described. Spider in bed sheets (or in clothes), it gets pinned against your skin and the pressure of you or your clothes against the spider is enough to initiate a bite. Otherwise they'd just run away.
The other thing is that their bites probably are not as venomous as we once thought. What's probably happening is the necrosis people report is actually a secondary staph infection after the bite, which people attribute to the venom itself. So long as the bite it kept clean, the effects are pretty minor. This is usually the extent of their bite after a week.

the only thing you really have to worry about where i live are rodents. lots of fields. still don't have a lot of them though, just as long as you keep your garage closed and your food isn't left out you're good. surprisingly, not a lot of snakes. they're usually only gardener snakes though, and they won't wander out too far. we get the tiny house spiders too but they're such a small issue i usually just let em hang around and do their thing.
@Awoo @baraposter @ceo_of_monoeye_dating @beardalaxy They are usually small in the US. The really bad one here is the Bark Scorpion, which has killed, yet is really tiny.
@beardalaxy @Awoo @baraposter @ceo_of_monoeye_dating Scorpions are surprisingly aggressive, and unless you know really what to look for it's almost impossible to tell the dangerous ones apart. I don't like them either.
I have only seen smol scorpions here. I'm sure there are bigger ones out there somewhere.
