Was that smoke coming from the container ship before the collision... or was that from the bridge pier, before the collision?
If so, the engines were set to full power before the collision. The smoke plum visibly increased before the collision.

Just look at plum at the start of the video (hardly visible) and twenty seconds in (massive). The engine power appears to have been dramatically increased and the ship appears to have changed course.
@Quentel they could have notice their mistake and tried to put it to full power in reverse or to turn etc,... but it would have been too late
It's a possibility. The dramatic course change before impact is hard to explain though.
