4TH QUARTERFINAL MATCH PRE-GAME ANALYSIS

18th Seed Fio Germi (Metal Slug) VS 10th Seed Zelda (Legend of Zelda series)

Fio’s name comes first, because by defeating Cirno the #2 Seed she absorbed Cirno’s top seed privileges, Highlander-style.

Now, Fio Germi’s match with Cirno was of course an all-time classic, one of the greatest in our contest’s history. It also enabled Fio to take revenge against Touhou (last year she was eliminated in round 2 by Momiji) and possibly enter the Realm of Elites, after last year being the quintessential Near-Elite girl. Fio Germi is the kind of girl who always performs well, and who pretty much seems impossible to dislike or anti-vote.

However, her odds of winning against Zelda are still looking mighty slim. Zelda has for two rounds straight been performing like a Champion, with only 2023 Samus ever having displayed a comparable level of dominance. Beating Ryza 58% - 42% is scary, scary stuff, very reminiscent of what Samus did to Reimu in the semifinals last year. That Statement win over Ryza is especially concerning for Fio, because prior to this tournament starting, Ryza is probably the girl I’d have estimated to be closest to Fio in terms of strength – with RYZA being the slightly more popular girl.

I’m not saying Ryza stands no chance whatsoever – maybe Zelda will be hurt by a backlash against this year’s NintenDomination, maybe Malon being narrowly defeated by Pyra demoralized Zelda fans, maybe Fio herself got boosted by that legendary Cirno match, maybe, maybe, maybe. But for now at least, the Italian gun gal will have to accept that Zelda remains the overwhelming favorite.

@ChristiJunior I honestly am quite astonished that a random metal slug character is so popular lol, the game itself seems extremely niche.

@beardalaxy I too was very surprised about Fio Germi making it into last year's tournament as the #9 Seed (I hadn't really heard of her before that), and more surprised still when she actually proved entirely worthy of her favorable seeding. Fedi has a lot of retro and arcade gamers it seems, and they really like her.
@ChristiJunior @DrRyanSkelton @beardalaxy It was my cousin that got me into MS, but alas, I remain awful at it. Wish there was more fanart of Eri.
Everyone is awful at it. Metal Slug 1 is about the only non-insane one, though 10 credit clears should be doable for almost all of them.
@DrRyanSkelton @ChristiJunior @beardalaxy >10-credit clears
Damn, I've been beating myself over not doing it in one life like the Youtubers do. I've been trying to give some allowance but I didn't know how far was fine, and kept getting sad over being further away from that perfect run. I'll give it another go for old time's sake and see if I'm within the safe zone lol.
1cc runs in Metal Slugs above 1 are going to require routing and preknowledge. Metal Slug 3's stage 4 boss, for instance, just has blatantly unfair patterns. You only can 1cc the game routing through to have a shotgun quick killing him, otherwise it's a total dice roll whether you die. 4 and 5 both have similar issues on the stage 3 and 4 bosses respectively (And 4's tower boss is pretty damn obnoxious if you aren't cheesing it too.). There are no score extends either so you can only fuck up twice in the whole game and if you do you're up against absurd health pools tuned for grenade spam but you died and lost all the grenades you were carrying.
@DrRyanSkelton @ChristiJunior @beardalaxy I only own 1 right now, all the others I've played were back when I hung out with my cousin, and he sold his PSP - or was it a Vita? - years ago. I'm guessing I still just gotta get good for that sweet 1cc glory, but can relax a bit.
I just emulate them lol. It's not like the average person beats Contra without 50 lives anyway. 1cc is very cool and very pro and arcade games worth playing have that as a viable goal but they're still games that were thrown together in cabinets with often spotty playtesting so it's probably best just to aim to reduce your clear credit counts down instead rather than feel bad about continuing. You would really need save states to practice certain bosses or routes seriously enough to actually 1cc a lot of these. Nobody is beating the Metal Slug 2/X final boss clean without a LOT of practice.
@DrRyanSkelton @ChristiJunior @beardalaxy Yeah, it was an arcade game after all. I really gotta relax lol. I got the first game as a gift way before I got the hang of piracy.
@ChristiJunior @beardalaxy I can’t recall if the Metal Slug series ever made it the Neo Geo or not. I was a big fan of old school SNK arcade games like Guerilla War and P.O.W.

I never had the Neo Geo because the thing was freakishly expensive when it cane out in the US in 1990, and the games were something like $200 apiece.
@admin @ChristiJunior @beardalaxy yes, it did.
I recall playing Metal Slug on a friend's Neo Geo CD (the actually affordable verion of the Neo Geo, because the cartridge version was insanely expensive).

The only bad thing about Neo Geo CD was that the loading times were insanely long.

@Suzu @ChristiJunior @admin i've seen metal slug in real life twice. once on my ps3 because it was offered as a free ps+ game, and once in a random amusement park arcade and it was gone the next year.

@beardalaxy @ChristiJunior @admin before playing it on the Neo Geo CD, I used to play Metal Slug 1 and 2 in the arcade. I can't remember if I caught 3 on arcades too.

I'm sure that I only played Metal Slug 4 in the mid 2000's in MAME.

It was an amazing game for the time.
