@beardalaxy as a former Mormon what's the most fucked up theology you know of?

mormonism

@MK2boogaloo i guess that would be subjective and i'd have to think about it but here's a few weird ones:

1. a man and a woman can get a "temple marriage" which means that when they die, they (and their offspring) will be together in heaven (as long as they have completed all of the necessary rites). a regular marriage isn't enough, even if officiated by a bishop. that's not the weirdest part though... that's when we get to temple divorces. a man can get a temple divorce from a woman without her consent, but not the other way around. a man has to consent to a temple divorce if a woman wants to get one. this gets particularly strange when you find out that a man can have as many temple marriages as he wants, but a woman can only have one. this applies to dead spouses as well. the only people who are capable of getting rid of a temple marriage without the man's consent are the top 3 highest authorities of the church. when people say polygamy doesn't exist in the church anymore, it still kind of does, just not on the material plane.

2. in the temple you receive a "true name." it's like the name that your spirit has, basically. you are not supposed to tell anyone this name except for your spouse, which you have a temple marriage with. the part they don't tell you is that the names are actually just assigned to a given day. for instance if you're a man and you go into the temple to get your true name on the 1st of January, it would be Paul or whatever. the 2nd would be Abraham. but, in february, the 1st and the 2nd are still Paul and Abraham. so everyone that gets a true name on the 1st of any month will have the same name. these names are gendered, though, and since only a man and woman can get married then they can tell each other their true names without realizing the mechanics behind it.

3. regarding the OP, there is a TON of temple work done daily, like a metric shit ton. not enough for names to have work done for them and then be thrown out. so instead, it gets rotated around. it's extremely unlikely that one person will run into the same name twice but it is relatively common knowledge that this happens. the reason given is that the people who have work done for them need to accept it up in heaven (which is completely different in mormonism compared to any other Christian sect). so, if multiple people say "oh i just got baptized for hitler" it's because hitler hasn't accepted the gospel up in heaven yet (which means he is in what is colloquially known as "spirit prison").

that's just talking about theology based stuff, but the worse parts about the church are those material ones imo. things like covering up abuse especially. things like how the temple rites have changed over the years to be less pervy. or how the director (producer?) of one of the movies they show in the temple was a child molester. afaik, they still show his movies there even now.

things like that just make me think that, even if all of their doctrine is real somehow, claiming that prophets make decisions on who to put into positions based on their communions with God is absolutely ridiculous, and i've actually talked with mormons who think that too. they don't leave though, tons of mormons don't believe in it but don't leave, because it's a cult and there is an absurd amount of pressure to stay and pretend and play along. leaving can often be disastrous and i've seen it firsthand. not good. i know some that believe in some parts of it but don't like the way it's run too, and i wish they would just start to break that illusion that they aren't one in the same.

there's a whole ass wikileaks styled foundation dedicated to uncovering shit about mormonism, actually. pretty wild. they had to stop a couple years ago though because they pissed off the jehova's witnesses and got sued or something.

i'm glad i am no longer apart of it and i'm glad to have helped a lot of people feel comfortable enough to leave knowing they would have someone to talk to.

i'm sure there are far weirder things too. maybe there are ones that are much stranger but since i grew up with it i don't think of it as being something that stands out as much.
