I wonder if Square Enix will ever make another FF MMO or if they'll just keep FF14 going for another decade. I don't play it, but idk it can be nice to just have a fresh start with a new world and everything. Most MMOs don't really do that though I guess, huh? They're all about expansions, not sequels. It's just that FF14 is entering its 12th year soon (from A Realm Reborn) and FFXI was 14 when its console servers finally shut down. Even the numbers line up, funny enough (though that's not the full story since 13 is 3 games).
The only other MMO I can think of off the top of my head that has several completely unique entries is PSO. I think MapleStory 2 existed as well but it got shafted. I would say that Runescape is an example of this as well, with RS2 and RS3, but not in quite the same grand manner that FF and PSO are.
@veru I have tried it several times. Just really do not like the gameplay personally.
@beardalaxy@gameliberty.club Same.
I've been trying it since 2017 and I'm never able to finish the story and quit a few weeks in. To be fair, one huge deterrent was the lack of a dark magic range like a warlock or necromancer and I don't like mages. Visuals are huge for me and is sadly the reason I can't seem to quit Blade & Soul despite even the combat of that game going to shit ages ago. But some years back, 14 got an actual scythe class, Reaper, and I've been meaning to give it a shot even though it's a melee.
The lack of personalization to the player model also sucks badly. I played Lalafell at first and they more or less all have sameface syndrome. I race changed to male Viera and it's worse.
Somehow the combat wasn't a deterrent as much as the visuals for me but it's definitely not super engaging.
@beardalaxy@gameliberty.club They updated the graphics for FF14 recently, so I think they plan to keep it around. My bestie has been playing it non-stop since launch and player retention is always high. I just wish I could get into it so I can stop torturing myself with shitty and predatory F2P MMORPGs from Korea or China.
The art direction is always on point with those regions but everything else is absolute dogshit. Well, as I type this, I'm either resubbing to FF14 and hoping it sticks this time or quitting MMORPGs in general for a long time.
It would be great if Square makes another MMORPG period, even if it's not FF. Out of all the "not dead" MMOs, I always find 14's players to be the most happy and satisfied, so clearly Square and Yoshi P. are doing something right that the others aren't. I might not agree with Square's overall handling of the FF franchise in general but 14 will always be a gem for the time being.
