Star Fox 2 getting cancelled is a fascinating case of marketing/console generation timing that I don't think has happened to any other game.

The timing was just right to make Star Fox 2 obsolete as a flagship product. We could only do one "jump from 2d to 3d" in game graphics console transition, in all the generation jumps. Star Fox 2 just happened to fall into that crack.

@DailyStormerDigest @beardalaxy It always seems strange to me how Donkey Kong Country 3 came out the same year as Super Mario 64.

And then you had stuff like fucking Fire Emblem 5 launching on the SNES in *1999*. I understand why Nintendo had grown impatient with FE creator Kaga towards the end, dude doesn't seem to have been a good team player (a new Fire Emblem would actually have been very welcome on the N64).
@ChristiJunior @beardalaxy I think that still worked because there was no Donkey Kong game in immediate development for the N64. Donkey Kong 64 was still years away.

Releasing Star Fox 2 in late '95 or early '96, so close to the planned release of Star Fox 64 as a system seller for the N64, was shooting that IP wad one too many times. Or so Nintendo's logic went.

Oddly enough, Star Fox 2, while interesting, is not as approachable as either the original or 64. You would think the rail shooter formula would not be that difficult to cookie cutter replicate, but the Star Fox franchise has somehow never managed to top 64. Literally any of the other games.

@DailyStormerDigest @ChristiJunior none of the other games and, like i was also saying, no fan games either. always feels just a little bit off to me, unfortunately. astro dogs had a really cool vibe to it but the controls were just sort of weird. star fox zero came REALLY close if it weren't for those motion controls and the second screen. i feel like, right now, nintendo might be the only one that can actually replicate that and they just choose not to.

this is a good time to mention that there is a PC port of star fox 64: github.com/HarbourMasters/Star
sweet 60fps and widescreen
