The second they tried making demons and devils "not necessarily evil" in D&D was actually a big noticing moment for some of my nerd friends.
I haven't played D&D since 3.5 and they were always evil because they were physical embodiments of evil, and that "good" and "evil" weren't just philosophical concepts but actual forces that drove the cosmos.

Guess they backed off of all that in later editions?
In 5th they keep pulling shit like this, making orcs and drow more morally ambigious was one thing but the actual embodiments of evil was another.

I never played 4th but they gutted the alignment system in it for simplicity to just five alignments, I don't think it relates to this though. It is where they made "dragonborn" a standard playable race for all the scalies though.
Sadly all the kids like and play 5th.

Mechanically it is okay, unlike the trainwreck that was 4th, but I'll be damned if I actually follow their lore changes.

@Deplorable_Degenerate @cowanon yeah I play 5th because I think it is just simple enough for everyone to understand while also being able to tweak things I don't quite like. The ease of accessibility is monumental as well, I don't think I would be able to get a group without dndbeyond. Which sucks because dndbeyond keeps getting worse. From the start, though, I've always used my own lore and just used the game for the mechanics. Orcs are LITERALLY evil incarnate in my world and a lot of other monsters are as well. The way moral ambiguity is created through that is the half-orcs who still have that evil streak within them that they struggle to resist. WotC got rid of half races (whoops, "species") too though for some stupid fucking reason. I find that so much more interesting than just saying "not all orcs!" and removing them from the monster manual. Also, justice for half elves, seriously wtf.

Played a good aligned half-orc once and his whole thing was how much he hated other orcs. The removal of half-breeds is almost as bad as good aligned devils being possible. You know what a good aligned devil is? An angel. ;p

I think WotC must have thought Paizo's success was because of their progressive politics and sought to out libtard them.

You know, instead of 4th edition just being terrible and Pathfinder being a viable continuation of 3.X
