for those of you somewhat familiar with running fedi instances, i've been thinking about maybe one day deploying one using DreamHost. it would be maybe like 10 users max. but they have unlimited storage for $14/month and i feel like that's pretty good (or $8 for 50GB). i just am not sure if the server would actually work fast enough for a fediverse instance versus something like static hosting or if there is a better option out there (if they have a lax TOS, which is why i was looking into dreamhost).
still not sure if i'll ever do it, but it's something that's been in the back of my mind so i'm kinda curious.
@Tony i'm not as worried about storage if it's going to be unlimited anyway, i'm moreso worried about the number of connections needed for federation to work properly and quickly. like, i've heard having relays for instance can slow your instance to a crawl.
So traffic goes to ta vps, then is passed to a vpn, then is passed to my home server.
But the first year i ran everything on a vps and it ran me about $3/month. However once we got a few reports and the db grew to around 120gb they jacked up the price.
My vps now charges me like $100/month to host (im going to fight with them about it because i think it's based on negative reports and not actual usage) but for the first year i paid like 3$/month?
Im going to be moving media off my home server though this month because my ISP is now getting butt hurt about usage.
