What's the best of the mainline PS1/PS2 Final Fantasy games? I haven't played any of them other than 12 and I've never beaten that one.

@beardalaxy FFVII hit the right point from 2d to 3d and had a pretty great story, but I would argue that IX is a strong contender. VII and IX tied FFVIII after those 2.
@beardalaxy FFX was the one I wanted to play most, after 20 years or so of not having a gaming machine. It's apparently dense with symbolism, if you're into games that reward close reading. Not a fan of the sphere grid, which doesn't offer much choice for a large stretch of the game, but does let you screw yourself if you're careless. You play it for the story, if at all.

I heard about how completely fucked FF7's translation is, and played some of it in Japanese just to see how it is. I'd played it as a teen, but with fresh eyes I see it as essentially glorifying the Weather Underground and other terrorists, and get the impression that this reflects the writers' actual sensibilities. I'm still somewhat nostalgic, but I have plenty of other things in my backlog.

FF8 was fun just to fuck around with. I have a save file with ten hours on it and all I've done is play the card game and cheese the Dollet mission while listening to an audiobook of LotR. I appreciate the bustedness of its mechanics over FFX, which is like a minecart with a control panel covered in glowing buttons that don't actually do anything. I don't think the "adventure high school" setting resonates with anyone over 20, but I did get some pangs of nostalgia remembering my own circle of friends from back then.

9 and 12 I know almost nothing about, but I hear good things about 9 in particular.
@beardalaxy everyone says FF7, I mean for me it was the 'break out' FF for me

But, 9 was better
@beardalaxy >Doesn't list FF6 as a mainline PS1 game
Because it came out on SNES?

@Jens_Rasmussen yes. i'm only talking about the games that came out originally for those consoles. most of these i probably wouldn't even be emulating i'd be playing like, a modded pc port or something.

@beardalaxy VII is the best of these overall. Story, characters, aesthetic sensibilities, best in the series - and the sense of adventure, sidequesting, minigames etc are pretty good. IX is good and caps off with a great ending.
None of these games have what I would call good combat except maybe X-2 and 12...maybe. I dunno the systems in those games are interesting at least. Balance is another can of worms and 12 has multiple very different versions of its class system (more if you include mods). X's battle system is delightfully snappy if nothing else.

Of the ps1 games, all built around the ATB system, VII is the least tedious (until/unless you start throwing out summons with obscenely long animations) and materia is fun to mess around with. I think VIII's draw system is kind of trash.

But all of that is to say you should probably play most of these games for the story. A lot of people really love X. I like VII, IX, and probably even VIII a lot more personally. But you should get around to playing it sooner or later so you can enjoy the bangers from the soundtrack.

@LittleTom i've always loved the soundtracks for all of these games lol, way before i even touched a final fantasy game period.

the thing with 7 is that i already know the entire story lol, so if i'm playing for the story that feels kind of like a formality. i'm most drawn to 10, but 8 and 9 seem pretty interesting too. i've heard lots of good things about 9 but man that art style is really offputting to me lol. i'd probably get used to it though.

@beardalaxy It's one thing to know the general plot points, but actually seeing how they're conveyed and taking in all of the nuance requires that you play it (or at least watch it on youtube lol). It's not a cliffnotes-able game, but yeah I respect wanting to jump into the ones you know little about first. X's a very, very highly regarded game so no shame in giving it a shot.
IX's character designs are kind of goofy. I prefer the aesthetic of VII and VIII by quite a lot...even with the lego popeye field models of VII...look, the characters look fantastic when you get into battle at least.

@LittleTom i mean i've like, watched so much stuff about ff7 on youtube with all the lore and theories and stuff lol. i'm sure it would be different if i actually play it but i just don't think i'd get AS MUCH out of it. i've heard literally nothing about 9. the only things i know about 10 are that it has blitzball, tidus has a weird laugh, and he might be dead or something.

@beardalaxy FF8 is my personal favorite because of game mechanics and rewards grinding with end game weapons.

...and I brain farted and voted for 9....
9 but i picked it because I wanted you to play the bad one because im an evil little rascal, i think most of these people picked it because they actually like it
@Labubu @beardalaxy 9, 10, 6 make up the top 3. The order is interchangeable
6 is so fucking boring you can only like it if you were 10 in 1996 and have had your common sense raped by nostalgia
Nierenstain was my favorite BTW. Why couldn’t God have killed you instead.

7 is only fondly remembered due to nostalgia. 9 mogs the shit out of it in every single way.

Second Place is 12 for me but only the zodiac edition which fixed a ton of problems and was never released outside of japan on the PS2. It is however the version they used for the remaster thank God.

IMO it's the opposite. 7 is a fantastic game that was retroactively ruined by SE's extended universe faggotry and it's disgusting fujoshi fanbase.

9 is an absolute gem though, and anyone who disagrees has anhedonia at best.

I never played 7 as a kid. I have zero nostalgia goggles. cloud is fucking boring.

Cloud is an autistic dingus but it has the best girls the worldbuilding was peak.

Also he's still more likable than teedus at least.
You can't just say that and not post pics your rebuttal

I don't have pics just ready to go. If you mean 7 has the highest floor for women, yeah probably because they are all at least average. Most FF games have 1 or 2 really good ones and the rest are meh.

Individually I would take Fran, Quistis, or Rydia over any of the FF7 girls
I was just hoping you weren't going to pick that sandbagging retard Rinoa or something like that.

I don't hate rinoa but Hell no. She's got all the Likability of wallpaper. Selphie is cute.

Its when the nomuraisms really started to take over and the second half of the story was a clusterfuck.
Absolute gem of an OST tho.
@chainsaw_appreciator @beardalaxy @Goalkeeper @LittleTom @Labubu Im intending to play thru it again before long. After I finish Chrono Trigger, ive got 8, 10, and a Perfect Game of 9 I want to do and I haven't decided on the order
I would do it exactly in that order, as Excalibur 2 WILL drive you to suicide.

Also off topic but I saw a foid ugly crying at the ending of 10 recently it almost made me swear off both women and videogames entirely.
@chainsaw_appreciator @beardalaxy @Goalkeeper @LittleTom @Labubu I probably got misty at the end too but I was 12 and Tidus was literally me frfr

@chainsaw_appreciator @DEERBLOOD @beardalaxy @Goalkeeper @LittleTom @Labubu You can just leave the game running for like 2 years to make the clock overflow if you miss the 12 hour window for Excalibur II, so I wouldn't worry about it

@DEERBLOOD @chainsaw_appreciator @beardalaxy @Goalkeeper @LittleTom @Labubu I'd recommend doing your playthrough of Xenogears first, and then the things you said in the exact order you said them
@NowDrawHerGivingMirth @chainsaw_appreciator @beardalaxy @Goalkeeper @LittleTom @Labubu Im going to slay on SNES rpgs for a little bit before going to ps1 era

I still have Tactics Ogre I need to beat
Also gunblades are cool I don't give a fuck what anyone says.

Also I'll just say this now and get it out of the way: BIG fan of Vanille. She got shit on for zero reason. Lightning? deserved, Vanille did nothing wrong.

I'm gonna be real with you boss I skipped 13 so I'll have to take your word for it.

Lightning would have gotten less shit if they didn't try to make her a forced meme. I swear to god I saw that bitch in an irl louis vituon ad or something like that.

Like in the context of the story I completely understand why she is the way she is but she still comes off like a cunt

The only thing I know about 13 is the hallway memes and that the yurifags made an enormous nuisance of themselves over the characters. Was it as mediocre as people made it seem or should I give it a 2nd chance
