The Sopranos: Road to Respect Review (6.5/10)

You know, I've never watched a single episode of Sopranos so I played this game mostly for the meme, but I am astonished at how good of a time I had with it. Mind you, it's not going to win any awards or anything, but it seems like the rare licensed game where the developers actually really enjoyed what they were making.

They got the entire voice cast from the show, it seems, and looking back at the environments they really replicated them in the game super well.

The storyline was simple enough but it had really good pacing so it kept me engaged the whole way through.

Unfortunately it does have a lot of PS2 jank to it. The camera only rotates on the X axis and is pretty fixated on following you around so it whips around really quick. The combat is full of combos and environmental kills but it's so clunky that I barely got to use any of it. They'll put you in 3v1 arenas with tons of stuff to pick up and ram guys into but the enemies are fast enough that it's hard to even get hits in sometimes, let alone set up cool stuff.

This game's combat and obviously the theme actually reminds me a little bit of Sleeping Dogs in a way. Like a prototype of that game that came out six years prior. You know, for a game that came out that late into the PS2's life, it's really rough. I was under the impression it was an earlier PS2 game. Doesn't change my overall feeling about the game but that's a little crazy.

Anyway, this game was super wacky and had tons of charm to it, and if you can get past the jank and especially if you like The Sopranos I'd recommend giving it a shot. It's like a 5 hour game.
