I'm no economist but is it really a good idea for a country that doesn't produce anything anymore to get into a trade war with the entire fucking planet?

Demand drives the market.
If the US is largely an importer of goods, and exporter of services, that means all the cards on their side.
Having the most powerful military helps too.
