TL;DR - it's worse than you think.

The region in question is the hypothalamus, responsible for the generation of Dopamine, and many other hormones.
The cause is hormonal overdose, not unlike Testosterone that can cause the shrinkage of testicles for the same reason.

Overdose doesn't happen right away, but around the 1 year mark of taking hormonal contraceptives.
Hormone levels typically return to normal, and the brain can recover after 3 to 6 months of being off the pill, and assuming the woman is relatively young.

The consequence of reduced Dopamine are many and varied, the big ones are:
• Weight gain, due to reduced enjoyment of food.
• Difficulty maintaining long term relationships due to reduced reinforcements of positive associations in the brain.
• Increased promiscuity / masturbation frequency, to generate Dopamine (same thing is observed in mentally ill men, and for the same reason).
• Depression, and if coupled with reduced Serotonin, Manic-depression.

This is on top of other side-effects of hormonal contraceptives, such as a change in partner preference, reduction in altruism, and increased risk aversion.
Important to note that these are just the side-effects of being pregnant, since that is what the contraceptive pill does, tricks the body into behaving the same as in early stages of pregnancy via hormones or hormone mimics.

So women on the pill (not all, as this depends on neuro-plasticity and other factors) get the option of delaying their period, reducing rate of ovulation, and prevent pregnancy, at the cost of... not being able to enjoy most things in life.
