Are fingerprint sensors on phones "safe"?

Safe as in, actually sending the fingerprint back to a database?

@hideki afaik they don’t do that. Not out of the box. The typical method is to calculate a “hash” of your fingerprint and use it to decrypt a key.
@newt @hideki pretty much yeah, but they usually aren't all that secure, as in, they can be fooled with a glove nor do they care about source of fingerprint being alive/attached to host. I think apple did something against it.
@newt @hideki which doesn't work well on people with racial financial deficiencies and i think can be fooled by a sculpture or some shit. (android's face id shit can be fooled with a photograph)



makes me wonder if anyone actually tried to unlock face id with actual bloody decapitated head
