I don't understand today's kids trend for low contrast, almost dark anime images

@coyote in some zoomer newfag weeb circles i've seen that they like images like this (sometimes with scanlines added)

@hideki it looks like she's in a dark room.... that's weird............... when stuff is designed for it, it looks okay, but when it's just some shit edit :/
@hideki >"don't steal or copy"
>"credit me if you use this"
> watermark
> it's just a shitty edit of an anime with a filter and contrast turned down

fucking shit it's tumblr all over again.... "I cropped this stolen manga frame to a square (C) me, don't steal"

fuck these people
@gingermilk @hideki it'd be better with actual film grain smh damn kids not understanding
@gingermilk @hideki I'm mostly teasing you, the aesthetic is only halfway there though, the noise is nice but it should be modulating hue and saturation less than value, film grain looks better than any digital art to my eyes, and digital art can look pretty good when designed with camera effects in mind (vignetting, blur, film grain, depth of field, long exposure/light trails, etc.)
@gingermilk @hideki these are actually okay, but these are literally part and parcel of remix culture and it's silly and unethical to try to copyright or claim something like this that's hardly even a derivative
@coyote @hideki yeah, I am not an expert on picture remixing (?) but they do seem effortless and only exist for the sake of "umm edgy style".
@gingermilk @hideki Netiher am I, I just think someone else drew it, it's more theirs than who edited it
@hideki i don't know if this is what you mean but for many years in cinematography there's been this meme where darkness is supposed to mean "realistic" so you would have films where the footage was completely ruined by darkness
