I don't think it was instilled in us, rather a healthy type of individualism was already in us but it was maliciously turned against us like you say
@Ivan_Ivanovich as you can see in a lot of other places, "individualism" happens on a sliding scale. A modern-ish example of this is how European sports fans hate each other but will band together against a common enemy. "You're for Chelsea? Fuck you.... okay wait, we got bigger problems, Bundesliga."
Or like how the Balkan Slavs have a complicated relationship with each other but all band together to hate either the EU or Russia.

modern sports it just a way to coopt those collectivist sentiments and channel them in an innocuous way, instead of in actual solidarity towards your people with policies like no immigration
