i love how steam and PC gaming eventually got better and made people who pirated games actually buy them, while nintendo does everything to force people to pirate their games even more that before
@hj I think people still pirate pc games as hell. It's just a bit different demographics we are no longer part of.
@pony piracy never dies, and it all mostly depends on economy in the country in question and pricing. I mean even back in the dark ages of pc gaming (90s) in russia, we were still buying games in jewel cases, even though they were unlicensed pirated versions. If game is cheap enough, they will buy it, if it's too expensive they will not, or will pirate it if they want to bother.
@hj @pony tfw still rember friendly pirate who had a stall at a nearby marketplace ehhh
@roka @pony still remember visiting electronics markets and seeing all these ФÐРÐУС unlicensed games and being denied by parents
@hj @pony I first played Half-Life using a pirate copy modded to be "in Polish". It was ridiculous "translation" made probably by ukies going by the accent in its dub ww
@roka @pony I first played Duke Nukem 3D and Quake in some really strange "russian translation" in which nothing is translated but couple voicelines. Also Duke nukem theme was replaced with Ñплин - оÑÐ±Ð¸Ñ Ð±ÐµÐ· ÑаÑаÑа midi. Quake was even weirder because the only thing different I remember is that sound of MC grasping for air when surfacing was replaced with "бÑÑÑ ÑÐ¾Ð»Ð¾Ð´Ð½Ð°Ñ Ð²Ð¾Ð´Ð¸Ñка" (brr what a cold water)
@hj @roka translations made games cheap, sometimes a distributor would make a Czech version, but only Czech, so nobody would go and buy those copies and resell elsewhere, so they were priced more reasonably for the local market
@pony @hj vidya translations were either half assed over here or just omitted altogether - then CD Projekt happened and set the bar really high with Baldur's Gate
