It's like the departure from traditional religion takes two paths:

If they let go of the zealotry, closed-mindedness, dogma, and institutionalism: this leads to a kind of simple, personal spiritualism, kind of like a libertarian hippie or deist.

If they let go of God or spirit, but keep the dogmaticness, institutionalism, zealotry, and closed-mindedness: this leads to non-theistic religion that keeps all of the bad authoritarian aspects of religion while shedding the love and peace and redemption and good-will.
