I'm always delighted when random people I never even heard of have me blocked.

@matrix I only know 2 people of the 70 people who have me blocked - I don't know what I ever did to them..

@lastprincess If that was a good enough reason to block people, I would have half of fedi blocked for posting weird furry stuff.

@matrix it is a good enough reason to block someone. if u don't like something you don't have to see it

@matrix nah, like. I'm honestly debating blocking you rn. Like, I personally don't care at all, but judging by ur posts ur a pretty toxic person and if u r going to reply to one of my posts for example I honestly don't want my followers to see ur account. Bc it's vile

@lastprincess @matrix he happens to be a lot more chill and accepting of others than you are being right now
@lastprincess @matrix then tell your followers not to visit his profile, CW your posts as "interacting with person whose views i dont endorse", or better yet:

trust your followers to be able to make their own decisions with whom to interact

@wowaname @matrix ok. That's actually a reasonable point, exept the last one. But still. I'm an sjw cuck so why would you even care to see my posts in the first place?

@lastprincess @matrix i actually like giving others a chance to say what they want, to engage in conversation, to see if both i and others can learn new things from these exchanges. i grew up on 4chan where conversations are anonymous, so i judge posts by their content and not their author
@lastprincess @matrix ive done that (to get rid of bots and annoying people from twkn, should i ever decide to waste my time looking at people i dont follow) but mutes work correctly in pleroma now, so i just use those mainly and reserve blocks for those i definitely dont want interacting with me
@lastprincess @matrix prevents those people from talking to you with something that you actually may want to hear. if someone is harassing you in mentions, then it makes sense to block, but when you block you sever a communication method completely

@wowaname @matrix like that's the whole point. To just cut toxic people out completely. If I would wanna interact with shit like that I'll go on Twitter. For me and for a lot of us Masto is a safe space

@lastprincess @matrix sorry to disappoint you @gargron invented the safespace mentality you now see on fedi. it hasnt always been like this and youre going to meet a LOT of people that compare to the likes of those you see on twitter (minus celebs and brands), and in ways its harder to filter all of that out because there are no rules on the fediverse, only those our instances make for us. and we are all free to make new accounts elsewhere

this platform isnt suitable as a safe space

@wowaname @lastprincess @Gargron Kinda defeats the purpose of using a open protocol if you want a safe space.

@matrix @wowaname @Gargron it's not tho? Giving people freedom to moderate however they want might be a good reason. People can create safe spaces tailored to their definition of "safe"

@wowaname @matrix @Gargron yeah I know that fedi can't be much worse then Twitter. But it's still very much suitable to be a safe space bc most of our safe instances just block the toxic shit as soon as it comes up. Knzk is different, but it's ok with me bc I actually do want to see toxic shit from time to time

@lastprincess @matrix yeh it's confused me that so many people come to knzk even though, to my understanding, its a japanese instance with an admin that doesnt care one way or the other about most english content, am i correct?
@lastprincess @matrix anyway, more power to you if all that filtering actually works for you, but keep in mind it does affect innocents in the crossfire. ive seen many instances with good, apolitical people blocked for no reason. and as an instance admin, ive been blocked by many without being informed first (i accept reports via email and have an address on my about page)

@wowaname @matrix like I get it. But I really don't care that much if someone who doesn't "deserve" it will get blocked. It's really not that big of a deal

@lastprincess @matrix it is a big deal but you dont see the fallout. discussions go on for days sometimes, reacting to the new instance blocks, and these blocks happen so frequently that it saturates our timelines. you think we like seeing all the content we see either? no, we dont, but we understand the issues that overzealous blocking can cause, so we think twice before doing that
@lastprincess @matrix so youre invalidating hundreds if not thousands of people's experiences just like that? "i cant see the fallout therefore it isnt happening, it doesnt matter to me"?
@lastprincess @matrix whoops i hit the send button too early on accident (luckily it landed at a natural pause and i dont have a cut-off post)

i was gonna add, i only found out that masto has an inline report feature like a few months ago. before that i was oblivious to the idea that people could even do that, i thought instance admins were just blocking me without telling me, but ive talked to a few who said "uh yeah we reported posts on your instance and you didnt answer" which leads me to believe that most blocks toward pleroma instances are due to the assumption that "silence from admin = ignoring problem users"... that doesnt help us moderate content on our instances, it just causes a lot more confusion

pleroma *does* support processing reports now, but it isnt too straightforward to set up. i think reports should be treated not as a final step, and should a report not work, a user / admin should reach out, go to the problematic instance's about page, see their policies instead of making assumptions, and try to find a way to contact

@wowaname @matrix kinda sorta not really. There are still moderation of English content, but just not as strict as in other places. I personally came here bc a lot of people I followed migrated to it from my old insurance
