Haha, I wish I had an amd. But I got a laptop last upgrade cycle (I was traveling 3 weeks out of the month) and amd didn't have anything high end enough at the time.

@shebang Does AMD even have high end laptops?
Their mobile APUs have an incredible value though.

@matrix Not really, just kinda low - mid range. Their desktops are killing it but their mobiles are very mediocre. I was looking in the $4k range and AMD had not a single offering.

@shebang I remember there was a laptop with a desktop R7 1700, but I don't think they did a refresh

@matrix That would have been "ok" for cpu, but I wanted something like a 2080 for gpu.
@matrix @shebang
Yes, I think they have a few. It just sucks that they're probably using nvidia GPUs.
@alyx
Yeah. My desktop used a Vega56 and it was awesome without the Nvidia drivers.

No bs, Nvidia does work well in Linux, but it was nice not to need its proprietary rubbish.

Haven't messed around with nvidia+Linux for about 8 years. I've heard that things improved a little since then, but AMD is still more Linux friendly.
@alyx @matrix Well. Ones nVidia experience depends almost entirely on how the distro handles it. Some handle it basically flawlessly and transparently. On Arch you just install nvidia and that's it really. Still, I liked using a proper set of open source drivers. More interesting development too. Proton seems to work just fine with either.
